Justice In Shadows

One rainy season, ten strangers received letters inviting them to a private island called Anand Island near the coast of India. Each letter was different, and each person thought their reason for coming was special.

The island was owned by a mysterious person named Mr. Kapoor, but nobody had ever met him.

The 10 people were:

  • Veena Iyer, a young former teacher who thought she was hired as a secretarial assistant

  • Prakash Mehta, an adventurous man who believed he was coming as security

  • Ramesh Sharma, a former police officer expecting a job in investigation

  • Dr. Anil Rao, a doctor who thought he would look after Mr. Kapoor's sick wife

  • Esha Sen, a strict and religious elderly woman

  • General Rajveer Singh, a retired army officer

  • Tony Narayan, a wealthy and careless young man

  • Judge Arvind Desai, a respected retired judge

  • Mr. and Mrs. Rao, the servants who took care of the island

All arrived after a long journey and were greeted by Mr. and Mrs. Rao, the butler and housekeeper of Anand Island. They told the guests that Mr. Kapoor was not there yet and would arrive the next day.

That night, after dinner, a strange and frightening thing happened. From a hidden speaker system, a recorded voice started speaking. It accused each guest of a crime from their past — crimes they had never been punished for.

Veena was accused of causing the death of a child while working as a governess. Prakash was charged with abandoning people during an expedition. Ramesh was blamed for carelessness in a case leading to a man dying. Dr. Anil was suspected of causing a patient’s death due to negligence. Esha was blamed for refusing help to a sick servant. General Rajveer was accused of sending soldiers on a mission he knew was deadly. Tony was accused of killing two young children in a car accident while driving drunk. Judge Desai was charged with sentencing a man to death unjustly. The Raos were accused of letting their previous employer die when they could have helped.

Shock and fear filled the room. All denied the accusations and blamed others, but the voice was clear — these were their secrets.

Suddenly, Tony Narayan drank his whiskey and started choking violently. He collapsed and died — poisoned!

The guests quickly realized they were trapped. The island was cut off by a powerful storm, and there was no way to call for help.

The next morning, Mrs. Rao was found dead in her sleep.

Fears grew, and the guests found the boat to the island was missing. They began to suspect that one among them was the killer, carrying out punishment for their sins.

General Rajveer was found dead the next day, hit on the head as he watched the sea.

Tensions rose. No one could trust anyone else. Judge Desai tried to keep order, but even he was not safe.

Mr. Rao was then killed while chopping wood.

Esha Sen was found dead, poisoned with cyanide injected as she ate alone.

One by one, the guests were being murdered.

Veena, Prakash, and Ramesh decided to stay outside the house, hoping to be safe in the open air. But even outside, the danger was not gone.

Ramesh was crushed by a falling statue.

Dr. Anil was found drowned on the beach.

Veena believed Prakash was the murderer and shot him in panic.

Finally, Veena returned to her room, trying to calm down, but she found a noose hanging from the ceiling. She remembered the old rhyme that was in every bedroom:

"Ten little Indians went out to dine;
One choked his little self, and then there were nine..."

Understanding what was happening, Veena could not bear the fear and guilt. She hung herself.

When the police finally arrived after the storm cleared, they found all ten guests dead.

No one knew who the killer was.

But then, a secret letter was discovered explaining everything.

Judge Arvind Desai, suffering from a terminal illness, had planned the entire thing. He decided to punish people who had escaped justice for their crimes. He hired the Raos and Mr. Kapoor to organize the invitation and setup.

Judge Desai faked his own death to confuse the others, killing the guests one by one to follow the lines of the rhyme.

In the end, he killed himself so the mystery would remain unsolved.

This story shows how secrets can haunt people, and justice — even if slow — always finds a way. The isolated island, the storm, and the mysterious judge created a terrifying trap for these sinners.
